Read the Love Letter Suzanne Somers’ Husband Alan Hamel Wrote to Her the Day Before Her Death
R. Couri Hay, Somers’ longtime Publicist, tells PEOPLE Hamel “gave her the poem a day earlier, and she read it and went to sleep and later died in her sleep.”
Alan Hamel penned a beautiful poem for his wife of 46 years, Suzanne Somers, which she read to him the night before: “She died peacefully in her dream” on Sunday morning.
R. Couri Hay, Somers’ longtime Publicist, tells PEOPLE Hamel was 87 years old when he gave it to Somers. They had been dating for ten years and have been married since 1977.
The poem is written in all capital letters. It reads, “I LOVE I use it EVERY DAY. Sometimes, even more than once a day. I USE IT TO END EMAILS FROM MY LOVED FAMILY. I EVEN USE THIS IN EMAILS SENT TO FRIENDS. I USE IT WHEN I’M LEAVING THE HOUSE.”
Continue: “IF LOVE IS THERE, I’ll love you, and I will! I’LL SHOW YOU SOME OF THE WAYS WE USE LOVE. SOMETIMES I FEEL OBLIGED TO USE LOVE, RESPONDING TO SOMEONE WHO SIGNED LOVE IN THEIR EMAIL, WHEN I’M UNCOMFORTABLE USING LOVE BUT I USE IT ANYWAY.”
I ALSO USE THE LOVE TO DESCRIBE AN AMAZING MEAL. I USE LOVE TO EXPRESS MY FEELINGS ABOUT NETFLIX. LOVE IS OFTEN USED TO REFER TO MY HOME AND MY CAT GLORIA. I USE IT TO REFER TO THINGS GLORIA DOES OR THE TASTE OF A CANTALOUPE I GREW. I LOVE THE TASTE OF A FRESHLY HARDWOODED ORGANIC JUMBO ROYAL MEDJOOL DATE. I love biting a FIG off the tree. I LOVE TO WATCH TWO GIANT BLACKBIRDS WHO LIVE NEXT DO A POWER DIVE BY MY WINDOWS. MY DAILY LIFE ENCOMPASSES THINGS AND PEOPLE I LOVE AND THINGS AND PEOPLE I AM INDIFFERENT TO.”
Hamel wrote: “I COULD GO ON AD INFINITUM, BUT YOU GET IT. What kind of love do I feel for my wife, Suzanne? IS IT IN THESE LISTS? A RESOUNDING !!!! No version of the word applies to SUZANNE, and I even use the word APPLICABLE advisably.”

The closest version in words is not even close. It’s not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction. UNCONDITIONAL LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH. It’s not. I’ll take a bullet for you. I GET TEARS WHEN I THINK OF MY FEELINGS FOR you. Feelings… That’s getting close, but not all the way.”
He shared, “55 years together, 46 married and not even one hour apart for 42 years.” “EVEN THAT DOESN’T DO IT. Even going to bed at 6 o’clock and holding hands while we sleep doesn’t do it. “STARING AT YOUR BEAUTIFUL SKIN WHILE YOU SLEPT DOESN’T WORK.”
He said: “I AM BACK TO MY FEELINGS.” There are no words. There are no actions. NO PROMISES. NO PROMISES. Even the green-shaded scholars of the Oxford University Press have spent 150 years and still failed to come up with that one word. “I WILL CALL IT ‘US,’ UNIQUELY MAGICALLY INDESCRIBABLY WONDERFUL, ‘US.'”
